Okay, so waaayyyyy back in March of 2007 I had convinced my parents to let me go see WWRY in Toronto with the lovely Miss Loaf (I love ya hun!) and it was.... AMAZING! We went dressed up as Ga Ga Girls and sure, we got some strange looks, but it was fuuuunnnn.
We had front row on the left side, which was awesome since I didn't realize there was an extra row (AAA) in front of the center rows for the lottery seats.
Anyway, I was really excited once I noticed the show wasn't like London but more like Australia and Las Vegas (and probably the other productions but I don't know much about them). There were six statues and less Ga Ga kids in the intro plus the little dance break in the middle of the song! The dance was also a little different but still Amazing!!
Yvan (forgive me for butchering names) as Galileo blew me away! Quite different to the guys I'd seen in London, he had the cutest French accent and adorable characterizations. Galileo (Figgy) had always seemed very standard between actors but Yvan gave him a new life.
One of my favorite parts was during Headlong when they were climbing off the van - Galileo was scared of heights!! I'd never seen that before (such overt personalized characterizations) and it had me laughing in my seat for a long while after.
Erica was also amazing. From the moment she stepped on stage I got an impression about the character that I hadn't gotten in London until a few words were said/sung. She also had nose/ear piercings which totally gave the character extra personality.
I'm not a big vocal critic. I loved the vocals the entire show but can't review that specifically. I'm more of a personality/character/blocking person.
For instance Danny (Burton) played his character almost like a teenager (young adult) trying to be all big and macho and in charge when in reality he's not. Aretha was. But its like they just let him think he's the leader just to shut him up/give him something to do. "I've got it Aretha, Gawwwwd"
It was so cute.
It was also interesting that so many of the bohemians had names. I wish I could have caught them all but I wasn't expecting the overload! Madonna in this show is Prince in the london show, which amused me highly. Madonna in London is the red costume/blue feather jacket (which also exists in Toronto but I don't recall the name).
I'm going slightly off topic, gah
So instead of Play the Game, they had Now I'm Here. At first it was sad since Play the Game is my favourite number. But I'd never seen Now I'm Here so it was exciting just the same. And after having seen it, I think I prefer it! At least in the context of the musical. I think Play the Game is still important in terms of story (now im here didn't seem to enhance the story in the same way) but the dancing was freaking amazing! I tried to keep as much of it in my memory but sadly It's all going away. Guess i'll have to come see it a few more times, eh?
Also noticed that the guy Yes Things (yuppies) had suspenders! Heh! It's the simple things really.
Killer Queen (Alana) was fantastic. I was/am a huge fan of Mazz Murray in London and didn't think I could see another KQ that would compare but WOW was I wrong. Amazing voice and stage presence. And I can't help but LOVE the mohawk wig, hehe. The red leather/spike costume is still my favorite from the entire show. Maybe next time I come up to see it, that's what I'll wear. (if i can afford it!!)
Khashoggi was amazing as well. The dynamic between the two was entertaining from the very beginning. And I noticed this, he has two color eyes! Blue and red! What is that all about??? Sam and I stayed up real late last night talking about the show and the story inside it and came up with a pretty cool explanation for the odd eyes but am curious if theres an official reason somewhere in the show that we may have missed.
Oh, and here's a little tidbit I picked out. Galileo has a black notebook with him that he loses after I Want to Break Free and Scaramouche picks it up to read from it before she is interrupted by the Ga Ga Girls. Now, she must have had it with her when she's captured (did she put it in her bag?) but when Galileo is being interrogated, Khashoggi has it and knows it's his.
I mean, maybe he was aware Galileo dropped it but It still seemed a little like 'uh, wha?'
One Vision was AWESOME. It's my favorite dance (I'm partial since I can do it, heh ;D) but I'm pretty sure this is when a lot of the cast started noticing that Loaf and I were in costume. Hehe. Some of the looks we got were awesome.
There was an awesome quote somewhere in the show (I cant really recall) about Britney - "it was a really close shave" that took me by surprise. Lol. Awesome.
And OOH, Flash was the best I've ever seen! Since there's only 4 screens (not cool and no staircase for them to stand on the medics danced on stage close to the audience. I've never paid the medics any mind since they always seemed like filler characters. But this one actress who was in front of the group on the left (house) was absolutely adorable! Well, adorable is the wrong word. Positively EVIL looking! I'd never really thought about it, I always assumed they just did what they were told, but perhaps the medics really ARE evil and sadistic. Heh. They certainly were enjoying torturing the bohemians!!
Fat Bottomed Girls was awesome. Finally got to see the 'feather duster' version. Only six girls tho! No guys but I'm not *really* complaining. heh. The girls were so cute tho. Totally took the idea and ran with it! I didn't know feather dusters could be that *cough* interesting *cough*. Wink
And the one girl who growled at Khashoggi when they were sent away, priceless!!
So I've never really liked "These Are The Days Of Our Lives" since it's a rather visually bare number. But this show had stuff to watch! Three couples were dancing in the background around the tables with other bohemians. They really made it obvious that they were 'brain dead'. I'm quite impressed no one cracked up laughing, some of the expressions were hilarious.
And Burton was too cute. Trying to drink his beer with his eye, then staring at the lamp on the table for a good two minutes. The bohemian opposite him was playing with the girl's hair (who was passed out next to him). It's these little things that are what I love about this show. Totally makes me think about the individual characters out of context of the time line in the musical itself.
Oh, and the lighters during the bar scene! Totally not expected and too funny!
I was wondering the entire time how they were going to do the "place of champions" bit. Las Vegas used the hotel the show played at as their destination and London obviously used Wembly. But they mentioned a Canadian place (maple leaf stadium?) but then went on to say it's really Wembly and in fact it was. I also picked up on the TCR on the screens whilst traveling to Wembly. Not sure what they were "for" other than Tottenham Court Road but it was cute to pick up on the Londony bits.
So Galileo does this French speech to Scaramouche in the Wembly scene. I have no idea what he said. Does anyone know? I could guess but still...
Okay, running out of things to say. The end was amazing, we got a ton of smiles and waves/points from the cast - totally made the night that much better!
And the one drawback of sitting front row - We were literally one of the last people out of the theater! In London there's a ton of side exits to use but apparently there's only the back doors in use at The Canon. Sad
Oh well, we still got to go to the stage door to meet the cast. They were as awesome off stage as they were on stage! We got a good portion of the cast to sign our programme and a photo. (of course the white of my jacket is GLOWING so it looks like I'm God or something in the middle). Need to edit it then I'll post it. Very Happy
We got to speak to a lot of the cast for a while and I must say they are some of the friendliest people I've met! I only wish I had more time to talk to everyone. I wish Toronto wasn't so far away so I could see it again soon!
